Woodturning - Turning Green Wood Course

introduction

Green woodturning is a superbly satisfying branch of the craft, exploiting the natural benefits of the freshly cut sap laden timber.

This one-day course will show you how to make the most of a basic background knowledge of the wood lathe and tools and that stash of green unseasoned wood. Our aim is to explain how you can take this wet material straight from the growing tree and with the help of the natural drying process arrive at a piece of beautifully crafted and finished work which will delight and impress.

what you will learn
How to select, cut and prepare wet unseasoned wood, mount and hold it safely on the lathe. You will also learn the safe and constructive use of the turning tools you will need. Your course will explain how best to hold the work pieces with drive centres, faceplates and chucks, covering spindle and bowl work, showing you how to get the best out of what many see only as fire wood.

teaching method
This is a ‘hands on’ course, each student being able to work at their own pace. The course will be lead by the tutor who will both demonstrate and explain the techniques to the group as a whole and individuals as required.

All materials (including timber, finishes and abrasives) for set projects are included in the cost, as is tea/coffee and a light lunch. Please check the course calendar for availability. Course hours will run from 9am - 5pm.
