engineering for beginners

introduction

For a number of years we have been asked to provide an introductory course for small project metal machining for engineers, so here it is.

An intensive course, run for two days with a maximum of 4 students and will introduce the student to the techniques required for either a small engineering lathe or engineer’s mill. Aimed at the complete beginner, the course will provide a step by step guide of how to set up and use either of these machines safely and constructively.




what you will learn
Depending on your choice, the course will take the form of either two days working with the lathe or two days working with the mill in various contexts.

The engineer’s small lathe option will cover:

  Safety on machine and set up
  Planning out your project and cutting sequence
  How to set up and turn with precision
  The correct cuts and speeds to use on a variety of materials
  Learn how to set up and counter bore, reaming, screw cutting and taper turning
  Set up and use of face plates and chucks
  Correct use of fixed and travelling steadies
  Turning between centres

The introduction to milling option will cover:

  Safety on machine and set up
  How and why to vary mill speeds.
  Correct feed speeds to suit materials
  How to fix and hold work on the mill table using vices and clamps
  Different machining methods to include, End milling, Slot cutting, Face cutting
  The use of dividing heads, rotary tables and angle plates.

additional notes & course availability
All materials for set projects are included in the cost, as is tea/coffee and a light lunch on all days. Please check the course calendar for availability. Course hours will run from 9am - 5pm.

There is no upper age limit for students, however the minimum age is 14 years old and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course and must not be left unattended during class hours.
