For a number of years, a few of the tutors at the Axminster Skill Centre had shown an interest in offering a Windsor chair making course but until now lack of space was the major restraint. With the relocation of the Axminster Skill Centre to its new purpose built venue, the extra work space required is therefore available, and so now is the course.
This action packed five day course will provide students with the relevant introductory skills of making this traditional English chair. Each student will make their own chair out of seasoned materials, thus reducing the wood drying problems of wood warping once it is taken home to a heated environment.
10 students are taught in a group during this course.
During the five days, students will cover a whole range of wood working skills, and so it is a very practical based course, covering skills from wood selection, shaping and turning of the legs, cutting and shaping of the seat, setting up and steam bending the bows. All these components will then come together to be assembled into a classic heirloom of a completed Windsor chair.
As well as the range of skills covered there will be a wide range of modern and traditional tool and techniques that will be practiced from traditional tool shaping adzes and spoke shaves through to modern power tools like the Arbortech.

This course will be taught by one (or more) of the following tutors:
