For a number of years we have been asked to provide an introductory course for small project metal machining for engineers, so here it is.
An intensive course, run for two days with a maximum of 4 students and will introduce the student to the techniques required for a small engineering lathe. Aimed at the complete beginner, the course will provide a step by step guide of how to set up and use the machine safely and constructively.
4 students are taught in a group during this course.
The engineer's small lathe option will cover:
- Safety on machine and set up
- Planning out your project and cutting sequence
- How to set up and turn with precision
- The correct cuts and speeds to use on a variety of materials
- Learn how to set up and counter bore, reaming, screw cutting and taper turning
- Set up and use of face plates and chucks
- Correct use of fixed and travelling steadies
- Turning between centres

Course hours will run from 9am-5pm (including approximately half an hour for lunch).
All materials for set projects are included in the cost, as is tea/coffee and a light lunch on both days. Please check the course calendar for availability. Course hours will run from 9am - 5pm.
There is no upper age limit for students, however the minimum age is 14 years old and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course and must not be left unattended during class hours.
