Introduction

There is no greater joy than using hand tools that work, a simple tool like a hand plane that will produce a micro fine shaving whilst making that pleasant noise is a great feeling, but sadly this does not always happen!

The modern metal hand plane is a great tool, but these don't always produce that desired micro shaving.  My first plane would only produce a thick shaving, and no matter how I used this tool, I could never produce two straight edges that could be glued together.

As with any tool that is being used to cut a really accurate surface, the tool being used will also need  to be  accurately set up, from the smaller block planes through to the larger try and jointer planes; these can all suffer and need attention from time to time.

What you will learn

This one day course with step-by-step guidance covers the maintenance and tuning of these 'workhorse’ tools, old or new. Students are encouraged to bring along their own tools, this will allow them to return home with these refinements complete and the know-how that is important to keep these cutting with a sssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
