This is a one day intermediate course, allowing you not only to develop your bowl making skills, but has the added bonus of showing you how to turn delicate thin walled bowls. The aim, with step by step guidance, is to be able with confidence to turn artistic thin bowls with a wall thickness of 2-3mm. We will show you how to develop this allowing you to further these skills in your own workshop.
5 students are taught in a group during this course.
All of the below techniques are aimed at producing a bowl with artistic and visual impact.
- How to select, prepare and mount materials that are suitable for the project
- Use of the lathe and speeds which allow for safe cutting of the materials
- Methods of fixing and holding of workpiece from face plate to chuck
- The sharpening and use of tools to achieve the cleanest finish
- How to sand and polish the completed bowl
This is a 'hands on' course, each student being able to work at their own pace. The course will be led by a tutor who will both demonstrate and explain the techniques to the group as a whole and individuals as required.
This following course events are available at the Axminster Skill Centre in Devon:
Course hours will run from 9am-5pm (including approximately half an hour for lunch).
All materials for set projects are included in the cost, as is tea/coffee and a light lunch on the day. Please check the course calendar for availability. Course hours will run from 9am - 5pm.
There is no upper age limit for students, however the minimum age is 14 years old and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the course and must not be left unattended during class hours.
