Introduction

An intensive course held over 5 days which offers students more advanced machining techniques on both the lathe and vertical milling machine. Aimed at those who have already acquired the basic skills from our introduction to engineering courses or those with basic turning/milling skills and who want to further enhance their engineering knowledge.

5 students are taught in a group during this course.

What you will learn

Fitting

  • Filing
  • Scraping
  • Using the cold chisel
  • Grinding
  • Hacksaw
  • Heat Treatment
  • Measurement, slip gauges and tapers

Turning

  • Left hand and two start threads
  • Toolmakers buttons
  • 4 Jaw chuck
  • Precision spindles
  • Precision tapers

Milling

  • Gear Cutting
  • Dovetails
  • Keyways
  • Further work on the rotary table (indexing plates)
  • Precision tapers
